The accelerated 3+3 American Studies B.A.-to-J.D. program allows students to apply a maximum of 30 first-year law school credits to their undergraduate degree programs and receive their bachelor’s degree after the successful completion of the first year at Saint Louis University School of Law.

American Studies, B.A Curriculum Overview

A major in American studies is 30 credits, including ASTD 1000 Investigating America: An Introduction to American Studies (3 cr); a breadth requirement in “Contexts: Period and Place,” “Identities: Social Difference and Agency,” and “Practices: Cultural Forms and Interpretive Methods” (9 cr); and ASTD 4960 Senior Capstone (3 cr). The remaining 15 credits are selected from American studies courses. With the approval of a student’s faculty mentor, up to nine of these credits may be fulfilled by relevant courses offered outside of the Department of American Studies. At least one course taken for the major must have the department’s “Community Engagement” attribute.

SLU's J.D. program offers students a diverse curriculum designed to prepare them for all areas of legal practice. A robust selection of courses and seminars in a variety of legal specialties reflect the commitment to public service and professional ethics.

Goals of the curriculum include:

Provide a quality legal education in the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence and concern for the development of individual students
Expose students to the interaction of law and other disciplines in the development and application of the law
Sensitize students to legal ethics and norms, including the obligation to engage in public service
