The five-year Bachelor's–Accelerated Master's degree program in Classics is designed for students who enter the University of Colorado ready to take courses in Latin or Greek at the 3000-level or above, and who wish to prepare themselves for application to competitive PhD programs in Classics. Students will normally need to study both Latin and Greek in order to meet their course requirements within five years: course offerings in just one language will normally not be enough, and competence in both languages is in any case necessary for competitive entry to PhD programs in Classics, which is the goal of this degree. The five-year degree combines the BA in Greek and/or Latin (Track I) with the MA in classics with concentration in Greek or Latin (Program I), Plan II (no thesis). Students with strong research interests may be able to complete the BA with honors or the MA with concentration in Greek or Latin, Plan I (with thesis).

Program Requirements

Students may take up to and including 12 hours of graduate credit while in the undergraduate program which can later be used toward the master’s degree. However, only 6 credits may be double counted toward the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree; those 6 credits must be at the graduate level (5000 level or above) and may not be used to diminish the language class requirement for either degree. Students must apply to graduate with the bachelor’s degree, and apply to continue with the master’s degree, early in the semester in which the undergraduate requirements will be completed.

Applicants should have a minimum average of 80 points on the 100-point Chinese grading scale. Gao Kao results are not required as part of the application. Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirement set by CU-Boulder may still receive consideration for their application. Our holistic review process takes several primary and secondary factors into consideration, so it is important to submit a clear and detailed application. International students required to meet English proficiency.
