With its major focus on human-environment interaction, our degrees analyze the distribution and interrelationships of physical and human phenomena on the earth, combines subject matter and methodologies from both the natural and social sciences.

In addition to this commitment, which has characterized the course offerings of the Department in the past, a second focal point in the Department’s approach to teaching has been the incorporation of as much of a field component as possible into the frameworks of many of our courses. Proximity to a borough of 5,000 people (Lennox ville) and a Census Metropolitan Area of 166,000 people (Sherbrook) provides much scope for practical projects. At the same time the glacial features of the surrounding Appalachian region, the history of settlement and resource development, and a significant river and drainage basin, each provide a ready field laboratory for the physical and environmental aspects of the program.

While we offer three majors (Geography, Environmental Studies, and Environmental Science), there are several courses which are core to all degrees. Students entering the Department of Environment and Geography at Bishop’s should be prepared to understand both human and physical aspects of the environment, while also focusing on a specific orientation in either Geography, Environmental Studies or Environmental Science. You should also be prepared to do original work in the field, ask and answer basic questions about the environment and our impact upon it. Finally, you should be prepared to become a full, active member of a small, personalized Department. Honors in Environmental Studies, 60 credits

Where can this lead me?

A degree in one of our three majors often leads to degrees in higher education, including an M.A., M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. It is also a sound basis for a career in:

• environmental consulting
• environment industry and private sector (including oil, gas and chemical companies, etc.)
• government services
• non-governmental organizations
• teaching
• journalism
• law and/or politics

Former graduates have been very successful in attaining admission to graduate schools, and obtaining employment in various occupational fields related to the environment, including alternative energy sources and technologies, aquaculture, hazardous materials monitoring and control, weather forecasting, water resources management, climate change mitigation and adaptation fields.
