The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has a strong focus on learning in context so you will apply theory to authentic scenarios throughout your course.

In your first year, you will develop skills in problem-solving, teamwork and professional practice together with learning foundation technical content. In Term 2 of Year 1, you will undertake an authentic industry project with work-integrated learning. By the end of first year, you will have experienced engineering projects from different disciplines which will assist you to decide which engineering discipline you wish to pursue: civil, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics or mining.

Second year is all about gaining in-depth discipline-specific knowledge and skills. Your exposure to projects will continue, which will give you opportunities to apply the theoretical knowledge you have gained to deliver tangible engineering outcomes.

In the third and fourth years of your course, you will develop a deeper understanding of the foundation knowledge that you gained in first and second year. In some units, you will explore specific aspects of your discipline. You will also complete 3 project units where you will work on authentic projects, sometimes with an industry mentor. In the civil, electrical and mechanical majors, you will have the opportunity to choose electives that will enhance your career prospects in your chosen field.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) may also be used as an alternative entry pathway to Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Diploma of Professional Practice (Co-op Engineering) for students who do not meet the entry requirements for that course.

COURSE STRUCTURE

You are required to complete a total of 24 units including:

  • Six core units
  • 18 units from a selected plan in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering; or seven units from the Mining Engineering plan
  • One professional practice elective unit.

MAJOR OPTIONS

Civil Engineering

As a Civil Engineer you will be involved with structures and systems such as roads, water supply, bridges, buildings and tunnels. Civil Engineers are responsible for the design and construction of all our transport systems, the design and management of our gas and water supply, sewerage systems, harbours, airports, and railways.

Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineers are involved in areas such as electricity generation and distribution, communication systems, control systems and electronic equipment.

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineers are involved with machines that 'move' such as trucks, trains, ships, planes and manufacturing equipment.

Mining Engineering

As a Mining Engineer you will typically be involved with the extraction and processing of minerals and earth's resources, such as coal, gas, precious stones and metals. As a Mining Engineer you may work with geologists to investigate and extract resources from the earth by planning the safest and most cost-effective way of doing so.

Mechatronic Engineering

Mechatronic Engineering combines mechanical, electrical and computer engineering to create systems that include both movement and intelligence.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND OUTCOMES

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is your gateway to a variety of engineering roles. Upon completion of the course you will be qualified to work as a professional Engineer in the Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical, Mechatronic or Mining Engineering fields depending on your chosen major.

Successful completion of the equivalent of Australian Year 12. An approved university foundation studies or formal Australian Certificate IV can also be taken to meet this entry requirement. Gao San (Senior Middle 3) - Grade average of 80% or Satisfactory completion of one year study at a recognised tertiary or higher education institution. English requirements: IELTS Academic - 6.0 with no individual band score of less than 5.5; TOEFL Internet-based - Overall score of 75 with no score less than 17; Pearson Test of English Academic - Overall score of 54 with no score less than 46; Cambridge English: C1 Advanced , Cambridge English: C2 Proficiency - Overall test score of 169 (with no individual band score of less than 162).
