Why take European studies at Dalhousie?

For more than two millennia, Europe has been the source of many of the ideas and cultural values of Western civilization and it continues in the 21st century. Develop a broad perspective on Europe through three main subject categories: history and politics; literature and ideas; and the fine arts. You’ll also learn a European language.

What will I learn?

The idea behind Dal's European Studies program is that the best way to understand Europe is to take a wide range of courses from different departments.

The courses are divided into three main categories:

? history and politics, including a variety of other courses in the social sciences;
? literature and ideas, including the study of languages and courses in Philosophy;
? the fine arts, including courses in Music, Theatre and Film Studies.

You will meet with a European Studies advisor to get the optimal mix that suits your own goals and interests.

Europe: Ideas, Culture and Society to 1900
Sex and Gender in Reformation Europe
Revolution and Rationality: Foundations of Political Thought from 1789 to 1900

Careers and future study:

One of the greatest benefits of Dal’s European Studies program is how multidisciplinary it is. The breadth of knowledge and the critical thinking skills you’ll acquire will help prepare you for possible careers paths that are as varied as your individual interests, including:

ambassador or diplomat
economist
policy advisor
public affairs officer
grant writer

Future studies could include programs at the graduate level in European studies, arts, or a professional program such as law.

Students must have completion of secondary school (Grade 12) or equivalent; A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses; A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject. English language requirement: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) – 81; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill; Cambridge English: Advanced - 180 overall and no lower than 170 in each band.
