The 4-year Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care (BA CYC) Degree Program prepares graduates for challenging work supporting children, youth and families as professional child and youth care workers, or for advanced positions in the child and youth care field.

CAREER TRANSFER PATHWAYS

Surveys show that almost 100 percent of our Child and Youth Care graduates are working in the field within 3 months of graduation (those not working were continuing their education). Child and youth care practitioners work in schools, community centres, parent-child education settings, residential settings, programs for street-involved youth, addictions services, and a variety of other settings. Diploma graduates are employed in front-line positions working directly with children and youth in these settings. Degree graduates find additional employment options in government settings and team leader or supervisory positions in community settings.

Graduates from the BA in Child and Youth Care at Douglas College are eligible to apply for the Master's in Child and Youth Care at the School of Child and Youth Care, University of Victoria and to several other Master's programs. The School of Child and Youth Care also offers a PhD program.

INDIGENOUS PATHWAY

The FACS Indigenous Pathway offers four courses and a practicum where you can earn credits towards a Child and Youth Care Diploma or a Classroom and Community Support Diploma.

Courses are taught by First Nations and Métis faculty with elders' support, and have been developed with the guidance of our partners at Vancouver Native Health, Elders and our Advisory Circle members.

Applicants must have BC secondary school graduation (or the equivalent in another school system); One course short of BC secondary school graduation; 19 years old by the end of the first month of the first semester of attendance; 17 years old on the first day of the first semester of attendance and has not been in school for at least one year; Completion of a certificate or equivalent from a special needs program and has been in school for 12 years. English Language Proficiency Requirement: LPI - minimum essay score 4; TOEFL iBT - minimum score 83; IELTS - minimum overall band test score 6.5 (academic module only); EIKEN Practical English - minimum placement of Grade 1; CAEL - minimum overall and essay score of 60 (computer or paper based); Cambridge English CAE- minimum score 75 or "B"; Cambridge English CPE - minimum score 60 or "C"; Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 8 in each of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - minimum score of 56.
