專業(yè)概況

This course provides the opportunity for those with a passion in a particular subject specialisation and the desire to work with young people, to become secondary teachers.

Students study their preferred areas of specialisation, in addition to a suite of core education units that address key educational needs of young people. Graduates of this course will have the flexibility to take up employment in both private and government secondary schools. A central feature of this course is the range of professional practice experiences Pre-Service Teachers undertake throughout their training. This provides valuable and diverse employability skills and enables them to connect theory to practice.

Mathematics Education Major

Equips students with the skills and knowledge to teach Years 7 to 12 Mathematics.

Emphasis is given to inquiry-based tasks, co-operative group work and whole class discussions, to ensure effective learning and teaching practices in secondary Mathematics.

Learning Outcomes

  • Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to create positive learning environments in mathematics.
  • Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
  • Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
  • Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of mathematics and the Australian curriculum and teaching strategies for mathematics teaching in secondary education.
  • Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in mathematics.
  • Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement mathematic programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
  • Review, analyze and synthesize knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of mathematics teaching.

Structure

Students are required to complete 10 Content units and 2 Curriculum units. Content units educate students in the subject area and the Curriculum units explain how to teach the subject area to others.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be eligible to seek employment in both government and non-government secondary schools teaching Mathematics.

Applicants must have National College Entrance Exam (Gao Kao) OR Successful completion of one year of tertiary study Standard Entry - A minimum of 65.6% of the overall score, Higher Entry - A minimum of 70% of the overall score. Minimum requirements for secondary school results can change, depending on the country where you completed secondary study. English Language Requirements accepted: Academic IELTS: An overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6.0; TOEFL: Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better; TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17; PTE Academic: PTE Academic 52, with no scores less than 50 for courses with a current requirement; University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced]: Pre-2015: A score between 52 - 57 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test. Post-2015: An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169; or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 including TWE of 5.
