As a special education major, you’ll have a foundation in the liberal arts, along with professional education courses to prepare you for certification in grades K-12 in mild-moderate disabilities, along with add-on certification in elementary education for grades 1-6. Fontbonne’s Educator Preparation Programs are recognized and certified by state and national agencies, thus providing graduates with excellent credentials for entering the teaching profession.

Program Highlights

At Fontbonne, you will have the opportunity to explore special education from a variety of perspectives, equipping you with the skills to assess and respond to unique student needs.

  • Multiple and varied practicum and classroom experiences occurring at the beginning, middle, and end of the educational program
  • Program alignment with national and state standards
  • Highly experienced/credentialed special education faculty/staff
  • Course integration that promotes conditions for successful teaching, learning, and impact on student outcomes
  • Highly successful program – often graduating more future K-12 cross-categorical special education teachers than any other higher education program in Missouri
  • Special Education – Paraprofessional Pathways program available for working adults
  • 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio
  • Varied course selection options (i.e., online, blended, and face-to-face courses)
  • This program is approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Fontbonne University meets rigorous national standards for educator preparation set by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

All undergraduate programs require a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale from high school (equivalent to a 78% on a 100% scale).?Other English Language Requirements:?ELS: Completion of Level 112; Inlingua: Completion of ESL 300, 301, 302; Kaplan – Completion of Higher Intermediate level; Completion of English composition one at a US college or university; OR: COMPASS ESL Language Score 260+ (this option is only available for students in St. Louis who have applied to the university. The complimentary institutional test may only be taken one time for admission purposes).
