Overview

The MSc Robotics at Heriot-Watt will provide the students with training in core elements of modern robotics and autonomous systems. This one year postgraduate masters degree in Robotics will equip students to work in industry in areas where robots can be used to improve productivity, transform transportation, work in extreme environments and improve the quality of life.

The students on the MSc Robotics will:

  • be introduced to core robotics techniques, from basic kinematics to robot control, robot navigation, robot planning and human-robot interactions
  • receive an extensive training in robot programming (especially ROS) and practical implementation of solutions on real robots
  • apply their skills in various applications through project work, involving systems such as autonomous robots (cars, subsea vehicles), humanoid robots, advanced manipulators for compliant control and novel robot designs
  • obtain access to staff from leading research groups to mentor their development and guide their research projects

Within this programme, students will be offered a degree of flexibility in the options that they study, allowing them to specialise in specific domains of application.

Why Study MSc Robotics at Heriot-Watt University?

Heriot-Watt is fast developing as a centre of excellence in Robotics. We have recently secured large equipment grants, a centre for doctoral training in robotics and autonomous systems. Plans are in place to build the National Robotarium, a new place for interactions between research and teaching where the upskilling of existing workforce and the provision of new graduates in the field of robotics and AI will be prominent.

The multimillion pound hub, to be built at Heriot-Watt University in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, will be the UK’s leading innovation hub for robotics and autonomous systems, delivering leading-edge research and support for business creation and growth, as well as data skills.

Students will also achieve PGDip and PGCert awards in this course.

For most of our Masters level programmes we require a good first degree in a relevant subject. Science and Engineering (1st degree classification): 985 University (70%), 211 University (72%), Other Institutions(75%). Other than 1st- 985 University (65%), 211 University (68%), Other Institutions(70%). Business: 985 University (65%), 211 University (68%), Other Institutions(70%). Art and Design: 985 University (65%), 211 University (68%), Other Institutions(70%). Exceptions to the above: For Masters Programmes in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics students are required to have 80% or above. For Masters Programmes in Brewing and Distilling students are required to have 80% or above. For Masters Programmes in Photonics, students are required to have 75% or above. Students require IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each element or an acceptable equivalent.
