What is the Course about?

Historically, the disciplines of business and law have been closely associated. In the global economy, businesses deal with complex issues concerning government regulations and international trade policies. Equally, the law has to contend with constantly evolving commercial organisations and business practices. With the expansion of the legal profession into areas of mergers, acquisitions and taxation, the skills of legal and business graduates have merged in many aspects.

Course Structure

Years 1 and 2 introduce students to essential business areas and fundamental legal subjects relevant
to business. Years 3 and 4 have a strong emphasis on core management competencies (Year 3), strategic management, international aspect f business (Year 4) complemented by legal knowledge and skills relevant to these areas. This course provides maximum flexibility to students.

Are you are interested in both the business and law areas and cannot make up your mind which specialism you wish to secure? Or are you looking for a course in business with a strong legal emphasis? Then, this is the course for you as you can continue on the course for four years or transfer to a business or law specialism after Year 2.

Special Features:

Maximum flexibility – Higher Certificate in Business and Law (NFQ Level 6) after Year 2 and Ordinary Degree in Business and Law (NFQ Level 7) after Year 3. Transfer option after Year 2 into other honours degree courses in Business (see CW908 on page 76 or CW708 on page 110 of Prospectus).

What follow-on study opportunities are available?

Level 8 graduates achieving a minimum of a second-class honours degree are eligible to apply to undertake a research or taught masters at Institute of Technology Carlow or other third level institutions.
