Explore the world of politics and the politics of the world. Take on the pressing issues of our time; debate the ways forward.

Studying political science will help you develop the knowledge, the skills and the qualities of character to address the multiple issues that face the Canadian political system and the international community:

  • the Charter of Rights and how it reflects the changing face of Canadian society
  • the rights of indigenous peoples, decolonization and the politics of natural resource development
  • unemployment, debt, inequality and socio-economic justice
  • the place of francophones in Canada and Ontario, immigration, minority cultures and national identity
  • climate change, resource wars, global instability and conflict resolution
  • globalization and a multipolar world or one led by the US, international security and the dangers of war

Program Highlights

  • Three or four-year year (Honours) programs lead to a Bachelor of Arts
  • Two main streams: Canadian government/public administration and International relations/comparative politics
  • The department has an exchange program with five universities in Europe
  • A Model Parliament for students is held annually at the House of Commons in Ottawa

All secondary school applicants must successfully complete six Grade 12 4U/M courses and receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Applicants who have completed the International Baccalaureate are eligible for admission provided they have achieved a minimum score of 24 and have fulfilled the diploma requirements (six subjects, minimum three at the higher level). Applicants who have achieved a score of 28 or greater may receive transfer credits for higher level courses with grades of 5 or higher. English Language Requirements: Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) - Test Of English as a Foreign Language: 88 overall; Computer-based TOEFL (CBT) - Test Of English as a Foreign Language: 230 overall; IELTS Academic - International English Language Testing System: 6.5 overall No band lower than 6.0; Cambridge Assessment English: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a Cambridge Score of 176 or more; CAEL - Canadian Academic English Language Assessment: 70 overall No part below 60; Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees - CanTEST: 4.5 overall No part below 4; PTE Academic - Pearson Test of English: 60 overall.
