The Bachelor of the Built Environment provides you with advanced knowledge of design and architecture, building construction techniques, client briefs, sustainable principals and substantial knowledge about the practice of architecture.

Design your career

Gain valuable skills and knowledge in the fields of design, architecture and urban design. You will learn the latest theory and techniques from our industry-experienced teachers. Importantly, you will develop a substantial knowledge base around the built environment, design solutions and acquire transferable skills that apply across a range of roles.

You will gain:

  • Advanced technical skills and a substantial knowledge base including design principles and theories relating to the practice of architecture
  • Be able to create innovate design solutions that respond effectively to client briefs, sustainable principles and that are sympathetic to the surrounding natural and built environments
  • Have the knowledge to articulate appropriate construction techniques, materials and building services into design solutions mindful of ecologically sustainable development
  • Be able to problem-solve using a variety of techniques and tools in order to synthesise and apply knowledge to a range of planning and design tasks of varying size and complexity

The Bachelor of the Built Environment was developed following rigorous consultation with industry stakeholders and benchmarking with comparative courses within Australia to ensure that students have essential skills as required by architects at the undergraduate level. The Bachelor of the Built Environment was accredited in late 2013, with the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA).

Course design includes input from a range of stakeholders including architectural and construction firms, ensuring theoretical and practical coverage.

The Bachelor of the Built Environment is aligned to the recommendations of the Australian Institute of Architects Standards for Undergraduate Programs in Architecture.

Modes of Delivery: Studio Based, Classroom

Units of Study

Credit points are a basic measure of student workload. All subjects are given a credit point value. Most subjects at Melbourne Polytechnic are 12 credit points. A normal full-time annual workload is 96 credit points. The academic year is divided into two main semesters; full-time students usually enrol in 48 credit points each semester, part time students usually enrol in 24 credit points each semester or less.

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods will include a blend of design presentations (‘pin-ups’ and oral presentations), model making, portfolios, essays, reports, reflective journals, case studies and analyses, projects, tests and exams. Class participation is a critical part of architectural education.

Pathways to further study

On successful completion of the Bachelor of the Built Environment, you may be eligible for entry into postgraduate Master of Architecture study at other institutions

Career Pathways

Graduates can work in Architectural Design or Building Design firms.

TOEFL iBT: 64 overall (Writing: 21, Speaking: 18, Reading: 13, Listening: 12); Cambridge English Scale (Cambridge: First (FCE), Cambridge: Advanced (CAE), Cambridge: Proficiency (CPE)): 169 overall (individual bands: 162); Melbourne Polytechnic: ELICOS - 3 ISLPR overall individual bands: min ISLPR 2+.
