The only Bachelor of Midwifery program in Alberta, Mount Royal University’s four-year B.Mid. degree prepares you to care for families during pregnancy, childbirth and in the first six weeks of their babies’ lives by combining theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience. You will graduate from this comprehensive, research-informed program ready to take the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE). Successful passing of the CMRE exam allows you to apply for registration anywhere in Canada.

Practical learning in the community

It is important to note that beginning in the second year of the program you will be required to be on-call during your practicum experiences and that this requires full-time commitment. In order to serve all of Alberta, we utilize all placements and you will be required to practice at a variety of placement sites. This may mean traveling and living outside of the city.

In the last two years of your program, you will have the opportunity to work directly with practicing midwives to enrich your education while developing and refining your midwifery skills, under the instruction and supervision of your Mount Royal faculty. Clinical placement may take you to a geographically remote area in Alberta, or across Canada. Your final year features a clerkship, enabling you to fully integrate your knowledge and skills to prepare you for professional practice.

Your career as a midwife

Midwives can work as independent practitioners, either alone or with groups of other midwives in a private practice. Prenatal care, postnatal care and newborn care is provided in homes or at clinics. Labour and birth care is offered to families – in either hospitals, birth centres, homes or collaboratively in primary care networks. You may want to work throughout Alberta, across Canada or internationally upon successful completion of the program and registration exam.
