The Master of Arts in art education is designed for individuals pursuing professional training as art teachers in public schools, museums and other educational sites. Emphasis is given to research, creativity and pedagogy through courses in art education, which include graduate-level studio work, to add breadth and depth beyond the undergraduate program in studio, art education, art/design history and analysis, and museum education.

Research/Studio-Oriented Options

The M.A. in art education is offered with two options. Option I (research-oriented) emphasizes theoretical studies and research projects in art education. At least 15 semester hours are required in art education and associated areas. Option II (studio-oriented) requires at least 15 semester hours in specialized studio work for art teachers. The candidate must earn a minimum of 30 hours for Option I and a minimum of 36 hours for Option II. Students may transfer in up to six hours.

To apply for a master’s degree program at SFA, you must meet one of the following requirements: Be in your final year of undergraduate work; Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Generally, all applicants must have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and a 2.8 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. English Language Scores: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score - 79 IBT (Internet-Based) and 550 PBT (Paper-Based); International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score - Overall band 6.5; Pearson Test of English (PTE) score – 53.
