Statistics is the science of understanding and managing uncertainty and is ultimately concerned with using theory and methods to extract information from data to solve real word problems. This program provides you with a solid grounding in the theoretical, computational, and applied aspects of statistical science.

The field of statistics deals with numerical information – data. Statisticians use mathematical and computational tools to make sense of data, and statistical models and methods are essential in all types of scientific research.

The demand for statisticians is currently high and expected to increase, with jobs in governmental agencies and the private sector, e.g. product development, pharmaceutical research, transportation, insurance, and marketing. A mathematics degree, especially with a statistics concentration, is good preparation for graduate studies in statistics.

Students also specialize in an area of application through upper-level electives. A graduate of this program is prepared for further study in statistical science, or to enter into a career in Statistics Canada, health sciences, business, government, industry, or an actuarial/financial institution. Each student must consult with the program advisor in his or her first or second year for advice in planning third- and fourth-year courses.

Undergraduate research

In your senior-level coursework, you have the option of completing directed studies, where you will investigate a specific topic, culminating in a final project and oral presentation. The Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences holds an annual undergraduate research conference on UBC’s Okanagan campus to showcase student research projects.

Applicants must have Gaokao examinations results provided by CQV If you are not writing the Gaokao, you must submit one of the following standardized examination results: SAT, ACT, Advanced Placement exam results, A Levels, or International Baccalaureate Certificates. Equivalent Entry: Huikao or Academic proficiency test results provided by China Qualifications Verification (CQV). Other English language requirements: CAE(Certificate in Advanced English ): Minimum score? of B; CAEL(Canadian Academic English Language assessment): Overall score? of 70; TOEFL Paper-based test with the TWE (Test of Written English): ): Minimum score? of 55 each for Reading, Listening, and Writing (4.0 on TWE); MELAB(Michigan English Language Assessment Battery with the MELAB Oral Interview): 85 final score with 3 in the speaking test; PTE(Pearson Test of English (Academic)): Overall score: 65, Reading: 60, Listening: 60, Writing: 60, Speaking: 60.
