Programme Aims and Features

The intent of the BDS curriculum at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong, is to educate and train students to become dentists in its mission of providing oral health care for individuals and the community in the Hong Kong context. The integrated Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) curriculum is outcomes- and competency-based and adopts a problem-based learning (PBL) approach in achieving this mission. The dental degree curriculum lasts six years.

Learning principally takes place in the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, the only dental teaching hospital in Hong Kong; There are also classes in the general medical and surgical wards of the University Departments of Medicine and Surgery, and with the ward and operating theatre of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Queen Mary Hospital. Learning also occurs at a variety of dental clinics and oral health education delivery settings throughout Hong Kong.

Professional Recognition

The Degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) of The University of Hong Kong is recognized as a registrable primary qualification by the Dental Council of Hong Kong (DCHK). The BDS degree has been accredited by the DCHK under section 8(1)(b) of the Dentists Registration Ordinance in Hong Kong SAR.

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education/HKCEE/HKALE or equivalent. English Language Requirement: IELTS - An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module; TOEFL - A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English. Grade C in English Language at GCSE/GCEO.
