The Master of Surgical Education is the industry leading course for surgeons at the top of their profession who want to pass on their experience and knowledge to the next generation. Students will gain an invaluable foundation in the teaching skills essential for training future surgeons in the complex sets of skills required for safe surgical practice.

Offered through the Department of Surgery and Austin Health, in partnership with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), this course caters to the unique challenges of clinical and surgical settings and recognises the advanced technologies that are increasingly important in surgery and surgical training.

Who this course is for

This course is designed for fellows, trainees and non-surgeons who contribute to surgical education programs and want to become educators. This includes:

Surgeons
Veterinary surgeons
Clinical proceduralists
Obstetricians
Gynaecologists.

Course structure

To gain the Master in Surgical Education, you must complete four core subjects, four elective subjects, plus either the Research or Coursework pathway.

Most participants in this course are busy professionals undertaking studies in conjunction with clinical commitments, so flexibility is key. The program is delivered part-time, with students expected to enrol in two subjects per semester, each of which includes one full-day workshop (8 hours) plus a series of self-paced learning activities (e.g. webinars, moderated discussions, and tutorials), accessible online, and spread over 13-week semesters.

Graduate coursework programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
