As we adapt to global changes that impact our cities including climate change and deepening inequality, concerns for community health and safety, and the emergence of global city-regions, planning has never been more critical.

The Master of Urban Planning is a professional degree that focuses on Australian and international policy and planning pertaining to human settlements and how we cope with challenging population and environmental issues.

Because practicing planners work closely with other disciplines, our interdisciplinary approach to teaching will prepare you to work effectively and collaboratively in industry.

Specialise your skills

Develop expertise in an area of specialisation to prepare yourself for a focused career. As well as core courses, electives and a research thesis, you will complete four courses in one of the following areas:

International development planning
Urban development and planning
Social and community planning
Environmental planning

Career Outcomes

Many Master of Urban Planning graduates enter the public sector and work in government departments and agencies, or for local councils and regions.

The private and public sectors in Australia and internationally employ our graduates in an increasing range of areas, including urban planning and design, environmental and transport planning consultancy, property development, and housing and community advocacy. There are also opportunities in tertiary education and research.

Urban planners work with teams of related professionals such as architects, landscape architects, engineers, environmental scientists, economists, property valuers, real estate developers, lawyers and sociologists.

Graduate coursework programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
