The Social Justice Major combines several disciplines such as politics, conflict studies, psychology and literature to prepare you to work in the challenging but rewarding area of social justice. Social justice and its pursuit are an important part of any liberal, progressive and democratic society.

Why study this degree?

This Major aims to link social theory with social action and change. You will develop a critical understanding of key concepts of social justice, including the concept of universal human rights.

To complete this Major, you will take the Social Justice Service Learning & Community Engagement course in a local or international setting. You will develop critical skills such as leadership through service, ethical decision-making and self-reflection. Experiences in the placements are viewed through a social justice lens as part of active citizenship and community participation. During this course, you will discuss issues in the local or international community, your role within the community, and social justice issues impact daily life.

Career opportunities include: youth justice case manager, community engagement officer, not-for-profit campaign organiser, program manager for community-based not-for-profit organisations, social research officer, human rights worker, and aid worker/humanitarian worker.

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Social Justice is a unique and exciting program designed for those who are passionate about social justice, want to learn more about social inequalities and contribute to meaningful change. One of the only of its kind internationally, the undergraduate social justice program integrates insights from a range of disciplines towards a targeted study of issues of equality and justice, offering a combination of academic and experiential learning opportunities.

Our Social Justice Major at The University of Notre Dame Australia draws together insights from several disciplines, such as sociology, conflict studies, psychology and politics to analyse and consider ways of addressing a range of social issues.

Based on the principles of human dignity, solidarity, and equality, the program explores a range of contemporary social justice problems in relation to each of these areas.

Students learn about human rights and important contemporary debates in the field of social justice, and explore specialist subjects such as peace and conflict, global development, ableism and disability, social movements and genocide. Students will also engage in advanced applied learning through courses on social movements and campaigns, and opportunities to undertake an internship or participate in our Experience the World program. The program helps develop skills in effective writing and communicating, ethical engagement, and critical and reflective thinking.

Graduates of this Social Justice program can choose to work as researchers, social advocates, practitioners and educators with government agencies, international charities, non-government organisations (NGOs), development agencies, lobby groups and many other bodies.
