Are you passionate about using your communication skills and engaging with digital media? Explore the theory and practice of the internet, video production, games and professional media writing, and learn more about the history and politics of media messages.

Communication tools and concepts are transforming the way we think about our identities, relationships and communities, from language to screen, and from emoji to social networks. This major provides you with practical communication and digital media skills, along with essential theoretical knowledge, to help you engage with and develop a critical understanding of complex media environments. What we know of the world and how we act in it is critically related to our use of communication technologies, from language to screen, and from text to social networks. This major provides you with practical communication skills along with essential theoretical knowledge and includes training in the use of the latest digital multimedia technology. You will work collaboratively on creative projects and have the opportunity to gain experience in communication technology and media production while critically reflecting on the relationship between communication, media and culture.

Career Pathways

Our recent graduates have gone on to succeed in government, corporate and political communication roles, journalism, film production, media research, marketing, public relations, strategic communication, public service, teaching, event management and promotions, information management, campaign management, web design, game design, professional photography and a wide range of other rewarding careers.

Further Study

This major lays the foundation for further study at honours and postgraduate level such as a Master of Strategic Communication, Master of International Relations or a Master of Commerce.

Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to Australian High School (or equivalent). Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; GCE A-level - Minimum grade E in English Language, English Literature or English Language and Literature. IELTS - Minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (must include Academic Reading and Writing modules); PTE - An overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 59 in the speaking and writing sections, and no less than 54 in the listening and reading sections. TOEFL - Internet-based Test (iBT): An overall score of 82 with a minimum score of: 22 in the Writing section; 18 in the Reading section; 20 in the Speaking section; and 20 in the Listening section.
