The study of Linguistics at The University of Winnipeg considers the relationship between language, culture and communication.

Interdisciplinary Linguistics examines the complexities of language use in daily communication in various social and cultural contexts. In this program, you will explore language structure and cultural context across a variety of university departments.

A better understanding of how language encodes meaning will help you to write, read and speak with greater confidence, fluency, and power. A better understanding of how the cultural context influences and is influenced by linguistic choices will enable you to extend your range of, and success with, subtle forms of expression.

Interdisciplinary Linguistics students develop excellent analytic writing and communication skills, which are assets in almost any career. Linguists find employment with interpreting and translation, second language education, writing, editing, proofreading, public speaking, broadcasting, policy writing, language planning and policy, literacies, forensic linguistics, sign linguistics, computer-meditated communication, lexicography, speech pathology therapy, voice coaching, acting, and as communication specialists in business, advertising, law, and medicine.

Applicants will need to meet the admission requirements listed for the country where they completed the final year of high school. Requirements are listed by country on our website. If stated for the country, the applicant will also need submit an additional English test. Secondary School Credential: Senior High School Graduation Examination along with applicant’s ID Number and Report Number for verification with China Credentials Verification (CHESICC). Secondary School Grade: 70%. Post-Secondary Document Requirements: Transfer and Second Degree applicants are required to submit their transcript and graduation certificates, along with applicant’s ID Number and Report Number for verification with China Credentials Verification (CHESICC). University or College Transfer Grade: 70 – 79% or C. TOEFL: Minimum score of 86 with no less than 20 in each component, IELTS: Minimum band score of 6.5 on the academic module.
