Extend your knowledge in your specialist area at postgraduate level with our honours programme.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) programme involves one year of full-time study, or two years of part-time study, after you have completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science.

After graduating with a BSc(Hons), it’s possible to progress to a Master of Science (MSc) degree. If you achieve First or Second Class First Division Honours in your BSc(Hons), you’ll be eligible for direct entry to a PhD.

Some specialisations may not be available for a Semester Two start.

Bioinformatics:

Bioinformatics combines Biology and Computer Science to develop methods and software tools to understand biological data.

Subject overview

The global availability of genome sequence information for human, animal, plant and microorganism systems has led to the development of new technologies.

Scientists require the combined skills of molecular biology and computer science to exploit this data for various applications in biological and biomedical research.

This specialisation will give you the chance to develop advanced skills in Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics.

The need for a comprehensive programme in bioinformatics stems from a rapidly changing philosophy of how modern biological, biotechnology and biomedical research is conducted.

Admission to the programme normally requires a completed bachelor degree from New Zealand, or an acceptable equivalent qualification from a recognised university (or similar) overseas in a related subject area, with the required GPE. English language requirements: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 and no bands below 6.0; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90 and written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 575 and an Essay (TWE) of 4.5; C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176 and no bands below 169; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 and no PTE Communicative score below 50; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of B-; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85.
