Extend your knowledge in your specialist area at postgraduate level with our honours programme.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) programme involves one year of full-time study, or two years of part-time study, after you have completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science.

After graduating with a BSc (Hons), it’s possible to progress to a Master of Science (MSc) degree. If you achieve First or Second Class First Division Honours in your BSc(Hons), you’ll be eligible for direct entry to a PhD.

Some specialisations may not be available for a Semester Two start.

Medicinal Chemistry:

Medicinal Chemistry is about the design and development of new drugs for the treatment of disease.

Medicinal Chemistry is one of the most rapidly developing areas within the discipline of Chemistry. It is the study of the design, synthesis, biochemical effects, regulatory and ethical aspects of drugs for the treatment of disease.

Core courses in Chemistry, alongside Biology and Pharmacology, provide a strong foundation in the chemical techniques required to work in this exciting field.

If you want to be at the forefront of designing and discovering new compounds that are suitable for use as new drugs, and learn about how a substance operates in the body and its suitability for use as a drug - Medicinal Chemistry is for you.

Graduates of Medicinal Chemistry often find employment in a wide range of institutions such as biomedical and pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, local and national government agencies, private research institutions and Crown Research Institutes.

Admission to the programme normally requires a completed bachelor degree from New Zealand, or an acceptable equivalent qualification from a recognised university (or similar) overseas in a related subject area, with the required GPE. English language requirements: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 and no bands below 6.0; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90 and written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 575 and an Essay (TWE) of 4.5; C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176 and no bands below 169; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 and no PTE Communicative score below 50; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of B-; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85.
