The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is Otago's most flexible undergraduate degree programme, enabling students to study from a selection of more than 40 arts and social science subjects, as well as papers offered elsewhere in the University. Academic breadth is complemented by in-depth knowledge gained through majoring in one or two subjects with the option of minors in one or two others.

Students are taught by research-active scholars, are expected to undertake a diverse range of learning tasks and are challenged to develop their intellectual independence. Graduates of the programme are well-informed, versatile, independent thinkers with the information literacy, communication, research and interpersonal skills necessary for a career or further academic study. The completed BA is an entry qualification for the PGDipArts in the major subject of the degree.

Computer Science

Computer Science is the study of computers and the work they do. We need a science of computers because, unlike other machines, computers are general purpose; the same machine can perform many different tasks and the same tasks can be done equally well by different computers.

Because of this, the study of what a computer can do is more than the study of a particular machine. It is the study of what can be done by a device which processes information. Naturally Computer Science papers deal with the practical matter of making the computer do what we want it to (programming). But we also deal with many other questions about computing and computers. Today computers are used not only as a tool in commerce and science, but also for research in many disciplines, such as Anthropology and Linguistics. Computer Science can be taken as a major for both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees and can also be included as a supporting subject in a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Some knowledge of computing is useful to all science students and many arts and business students even if you do not intend to major in Computer Science.

  • COMP 160 General Programming
  • ENGL 127 Effective Writing
  • One of MATH 151, MATH 160, MATH 170, COMO 101, STAT 110, STAT 115, BSNS 112, FINC 102, or an approved alternative
  • COMP 150 Practical Programming (recommended) or another Arts paper

200-level

  • COSC 241 Programming and Problem Solving
  • COSC 242 Algorithms and Data Structures
  • COSC 243 Computer Architecture and Operating Systems
  • COSC 244 Data-communication, Networks, Internet

300-level

  • COSC 326 Effective Programming

  • COSC 341 Theory of Computing
  • COSC 342 Computer Graphics
  • COSC 343 Artificial Intelligence
  • COSC 344 Database Theory and Applications

Students must have Senior High School graduation and one year of successful study at a recognized institution of university standing; or Senior High School graduation and completion of a diploma with high passing grades at a recognized institute or university. Specific requirements may vary from Province to Province. English language requirements: IELTS score of 6.0 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL - Score of 80 (writing 20); Paper-based TOEFL - Score of 550 (TWE 4.5); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 58 with no communicative skills score below 50.
