Our undergraduate curriculum offers a great deal of flexibility. Many of our students, preparing for business careers, pursue a dual degree in economics and business in conjunction with Pitt's College of Business Administration. Our majors benefit from a wide range of seminars emphasizing writing and student research. The department's Bachelor of Science track enables students with appropriate backgrounds to take courses that fully exploit their quantitative training.

A major in economics can serve a variety of purposes within the general liberal arts curriculum and provides a background for postgraduate study in a number of professional schools. Additionally, economics is frequently taken as a dual major with business at the undergraduate level. Graduate-level options that economics majors can pursue are: law, business, economic forecasting, public administration, professional health management, hospital administration, urban affairs, and transportation studies. Because the range of interests among economics majors is quite broad, students are encouraged to choose a plan of study that fits their individual needs in conjunction with a departmental advisor.

Required courses for the BA in Economics The BA in economics requires the completion of 28 credits in economics distributed as follows. ECON 0100 Introduction to Microeconomic Theory ECON 0110 Introduction to Macroeconomic Theory ECON 0150 Economic Data Analysis ECON 0900 Economic: Introduction to the Field Majors ECON 1100 Intermediate Microeconomics ECON 1110 Intermediate Macroeconomics One ECON elective course Two ECON 1000-level elective courses One ECON 1700-level writing course Note: ECON 0800 does not count as an ECON elective course.

Prospective students who have not earned college credits since graduating from high school with a diploma or GED should consult this section for information on admission to the University of Pittsburgh. For the Pittsburgh campus, a 100 or higher TOEFL composite score with sub scores of 21 or higher is considered competitive, or a 7.0 IELTS with sub scores of 6.0 or higher.
