Why study Business, Media and Social Sciences?

The International Foundation Year in Business, Media and Social Sciences is your route to a range of undergraduate degrees at the University of Sussex. It is a university preparation course that will give you the English language level, academic knowledge, and study skills you need to succeed in your degree. It is an excellent choice for students who would like a little more support with their studies, or who do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry into a degree programme.

During the International Foundation Year your learning will be structured in the same way as University teaching. This ensures you receive excellent preparation for undergraduate study.

You will study a range of different modules throughout the programme, based on the pathway that you choose. You can choose one of the following pathways:

• Business, Management and Economics
• Film and Media
• Social Sciences, Global Studies and Law

You should choose your pathway based on the degree you wish to study.

At the end of semester one you have the option to change your pathway and final progression degree. Our expert staff will guide you throughout the programme to ensure you make the right choices. This makes this course popular with students who are unsure which undergraduate programme they wish to study, or those who decide to change their degree.

What you’ll study

In semester one you will study one module (worth 30 credits) based on your chosen pathway, and two compulsory modules, Academic English Skills and CareerAhead. At the end of semester one you have the option to change your pathway and degree.

In semester two you will continue to study the Academic English and CareerAhead modules, and you will select three academic modules according to your degree choice.

• Sociology: Crime and Deviance (10 credits)

Film and Media

• Creative Media Technologies: Digital Video (10 credits)
• Creative Media Technologies: Photography (10 credits)
• Global Cinemas (10 credits)
• Media and Communications (10 credits)

Semester one and two modules – studied by all students

You will study these two modules for the duration of your International Foundation Year.

Your degree at Sussex

Due to the flexible nature of this programme, you are able to change your pathway and/or progression degree within the first semester.
