Traditional Borders between Different Media are Changing or Disappearing

Theatre performances use film and new media. Television seeks to interact with its viewers through social media. Films consist of computer-generated imagery. These trends signal the need to study the interconnections between the different media. This approach is precisely the focus of the Bachelor’s programme in Media and Culture.

The Media and Culture programme studies different types of media in a broad context and in relation to one another. You learn about the history, theory and larger social context in which different media function. We put great emphasis on developing academic skills in order to analyse a film, television programme, game, dance or theater performance.

Eye for the Professional Field

Media and Culture provides opportunities for you to meet a diverse range of professionals in the field, such as programmers, curators, producers and policymakers (for example, people responsible for city marketing). The interaction between students and professionals is further underscored by the possibility of doing an internship in the third year of the Bachelor’s programme. An internship can be a good preparation for, or even the actual start of, a professional career.

After the Bachelor’s Programme

After finishing the Bachelor’s programme in Media and Culture, many alumni end up working in television or film production, the cultural sector (e.g. theatres, cultural centres) or in promotion and marketing. A significant amount of students choose to continue their studies in a Master’s programme; for instance, the Master in Media, Art and Performance Studies or the Master in New Media & Digital Culture.

First of all you must have a VWO diploma (any profile) or a foreign or international equivalent, such as the IB diploma. In addition you have to provide proof that you are proficient in English. The selection procedure also serves to establish whether UCU would be a good fit for you. We look for the following criteria in our students: academic excellence and curiosity; ambition and motivation, academically as well as professionally; broad intellectual orientation; interest in contributing to campus life; social engagement; affinity with living and studying in an international environment.
