1. 英屬哥倫比亞大學

An undergraduate could feel overwhelmed at a school as big as UBC, with its sprawling Point Grey campus and an international reputation for research and graduate programs. It’s an ongoing challenge that the university is addressing with efforts to create a more intimate learning environment by adding more student-centric learning spaces and engaging neighbouring municipalities as community partners.

2. 多倫多大學

With 8,000 faculty, more than 700 undergraduate programs and around 83,000 students on three campuses, the University of Toronto is in a class of its own. St. George, the leafy downtown campus, has the historic stone buildings, while the newer Scarborough and Mississauga campuses are in quieter suburban settings. U of T’s halls have echoed with the debates of several future premiers and prime ministers.

3. 麥吉爾大學

McGill attracts bright students from around the world. “A degree from McGill right now is worth a lot, because the reputation of McGill worldwide is strong,” says principal Suzanne Fortier. The university has cultivated more Rhodes Scholars and more Nobel laureates than any other school in Canada.

4. 滑鐵盧大學

The University of Waterloo is a research mecca. There’s the Balsillie School of International Affairs, a collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University, and the prestigious Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is nearby. The Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre opened in 2012, as did a campus in Stratford, Ont., dedicated to digital media and information technology.

5. 西安大略大學

Built along the banks of the Thames River in the “forest city” of London, Ont., Western is one of the largest universities in the province. With more than 400 academic programs, 90  rst-year courses and approximately 175 student clubs, it is more than just a regional powerhouse; increasingly, the school is building international recognition.

6. 戴爾豪斯大學

Dalhousie University dates back to 1818, when the ninth earl of Dalhousie, then the governor of Nova Scotia, used funds collected during the War of 1812 to open a college that could be attended by any person from any class. Today it is the largest university in Atlantic Canada.

7. 皇后大學

Queen’s is a hub of academic research on the shores of Lake Ontario near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. The campus is dotted with charming limestone buildings in Romanesque revival and neo-Gothic style, several more than 100 years old.

8. 麥克瑪斯特大學

Although its steel- and manufacturing-based economy gave Hamilton its “Steeltown” moniker, students need not be deterred by images of an industrial wasteland. McMaster is actually a green campus with ivy-covered buildings blending in with modern glass and steel.

9. 約克大學

York’s students may complain about its location, which is so remote they have to take a bus from the subway station. But a new subway line under construction will make trips downtown or to Yorkdale Mall a lot more palatable. In the meantime, it attracts students to its renowned programs in business, law, science and fine arts.

10. 卡爾加里大學

The University of Calgary is a young university in a dynamic city. A location in the country’s energy capital has its perks (excellent job opportunities) and its problems (a shortage of apartments). “We’re achieving the high standards we’ve set before us, as we near the goal of becoming a top five research institute in the country,” says president Elizabeth Cannon.

10. 阿爾伯塔大學

The research-intensive University of Alberta offers more than 200 undergraduate programs and 170 graduate programs. Located south of the Legislature Building at one end of Whyte Avenue, where Edmontonians shop and socialize, the main campus is a serene green space surrounded by newer steel-and-glass buildings devoted to engineering, science and medicine.
